Scarborough is mid-change. The older beach cottages that used to dominate the streets behind the foreshore are steadily disappearing, replaced by double-story townhouses and medium-density developments. At the same time, the apartment towers along The Esplanade and West Coast Highway keep filling up. From a removals perspective, this makes Scarborough one of the more varied suburbs we work in. One week it is a clean-out from a 1960s cottage, the next it is a third-floor apartment move with a two-hour elevator booking and a destination down a narrow rear laneway.
We are based in Tuart Hill, which puts us close to Scarborough without the travel time that operators from further east add to their hourly rate. We use a medium five-to-six-tonne truck for beachfront apartment jobs specifically — a standard high-cube pantech will not fit in several of the basement loading bays along The Esplanade and West Coast Highway. The beachfront apartment buildings along The Esplanade and West Coast Highway have service elevator booking windows — usually two to three hours. Several buildings also have basement or loading bay clearances under 3.5 metres, which means a standard high-cube pantech will not fit. We use a medium truck for these jobs and confirm clearance heights before the day. Pre-staging furniture in the hallway before the elevator window opens is how we make sure the run is clean and the slot is not wasted.
New build townhouses on Scarborough's subdivided blocks — particularly in streets like Gildercliffe Street — often sit down steep, narrow laneways with overhanging balconies on both sides. There is no room to turn a vehicle around. We reverse in with a spotter guiding clearance, or park on the main street and carry. One delivery on Gildercliffe Street required the 6-tonne truck to reverse down a steep incline with one crew member spotting each side — completed damage-free because we assessed it before arriving.
The streets around Scarborough Beach Pool are actively enforced, particularly on weekends and in summer. Showing up without a plan for the truck can mean parking further away than expected and adding a longer carry. We sort this before moving day.
Furniture sitting on a balcony close to the water picks up salt residue. We wrap before we carry, not at the truck — because the truck door is often open within a kilometre of the Indian Ocean and abrasive beach sand in transit can damage fabric surfaces.
