Do removalists disassemble furniture? Here is what most removalists actually do, and what to ask before you book. Honest answers from a Perth removalist.

Yes, most removalists disassemble furniture. But what is included varies significantly between companies, and assuming yours will handle everything without asking first is one of the more common moving-day surprises. At Awesome Mate Removals, basic disassembly of standard items is included as part of the job. Complex or specialist items are a different conversation, and we will get to those.
These are the items that come up on almost every job we run:
Some items we will not touch, and for good reason. Wall-mounted items including TV brackets and fixed shelving need to come off the wall before we arrive. That is your responsibility or a handyman's job. Built-in wardrobes and custom joinery are not removalist territory. Anything bolted to the structure of the building stays that way until a tradesperson removes it.
Older furniture that has been assembled once and lived in a fixed position for years is also worth a conversation before moving day. Some pieces are structurally sound in place but will not survive being taken apart. We will tell you honestly if we think a piece is better moved whole, even if that makes the load more awkward.
IKEA furniture gets its own section because it is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is more nuanced than most removalists will admit.
The short version: IKEA flat packs can be disassembled and reassembled, but not all pieces survive it equally well.
The cam lock connectors used in most IKEA pieces hold up reasonably well for a second disassembly if done carefully. The problem areas are screws that go directly into raw particle board without a metal insert, and the thin nailed backing panels on items like BILLY bookcases. Remove a direct particle board screw and there is a real chance the hole strips on reassembly, leaving the joint permanently loose. Pry out the 40-odd brad nails holding the back panel on a bookcase and you risk cracking or warping the backing, which is what keeps the whole unit square.
Specific IKEA lines behave very differently. MALM bed frames are built with heavier hardware and tolerate disassembly well. KALLAX cube shelves are workable if you use a rubber mallet and take your time. PAX wardrobes are the ones that cause the most problems. They need to be laid flat on the floor to be dismantled safely, which takes up significant space and time, and the reassembly depends on getting the base perfectly level at the new site.
Our position: we will disassemble and reassemble IKEA furniture, and we will be honest with you about what we think the risk is for your specific pieces before we start. For older IKEA items or pieces that have already been assembled more than once, we will tell you if we think replacement is a better call than reassembly.
We bring a full tool kit to every job. You do not need to supply anything. Allen keys for flat pack fittings are included.
Reassembly is always included. If we take it apart, we put it back together. That applies to bed frames, wardrobes, dining tables, and everything else we disassemble on the job.
We charge by the hour on local Perth moves. Disassembly time counts as part of the job. For a standard bedroom, expect bed frame disassembly and wardrobe breakdown to add roughly 45 minutes to an hour to your total move time. Reassembly at the other end adds similar time.
The practical way to keep costs down: pre-disassemble whatever you can before we arrive. If your dining table legs are already off and bagged when we get there, that saves time you are paying for. Check our guide on how much removalists cost per hour in Perth for how the hourly rate applies across a full job.
These are the ones we see regularly, either from customers who pre-disassembled before we arrived or from less careful handling on the job:
Throwing all screws and dowels from multiple items into one bag is how you spend an hour on reassembly day trying to match hardware. Bag each item's hardware separately and tape the bag to one of the panels.
Using a high-speed drill to remove or replace screws in flat-pack material strips the hole immediately. Manual screwdriver only.
Ripping the thin plywood backing off a bookcase with a hammer claw instead of carefully pulling individual brad nails almost always cracks or warps the panel. Once it is gone, the unit will not sit square.
Taking apart a tall wardrobe while it is still standing causes the top panels to snap sideways under their own weight. Lay it flat before breaking it down.
Some items are genuinely easier and safer to move assembled than to disassemble and risk. If we think something falls into this category, we will tell you before we start.

Basic items like bed frames, dining tables, and flat-pack wardrobes are included as standard in our full-service hourly rate. Complex or specialist items are discussed at the quote stage. Always confirm with your removalist before moving day whether disassembly is included or charged separately.
We bring a full tool kit to every job, including Allen keys for flat-pack fittings. You do not need to supply anything.
Yes, always. If we disassemble it, we reassemble it at the new address. This is included as part of the job, not an extra charge.
Yes, but not all IKEA pieces survive disassembly equally well. MALM bed frames and KALLAX shelves generally hold up. PAX wardrobes are more involved and carry more risk. Screws going directly into raw particle board are the main failure point. We will give you an honest assessment of your specific IKEA pieces before we start and flag anything we think is better replaced than reassembled.
